Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. founded Osteopathy in the 1800s after being disappointed in the medical practices of the time. Still had lost his first wife and six children to infectious diseases and felt that medicine was unable to treat his family and several others. As a surgeon in the army he saw how medicine had a crude understanding of disease which they believed can only be relieved by high doses of morphine, opium, alcohol and mercury.
He developed a system of gentle manipulation based on in depth study of human anatomy. His practices at the time were considered unorthodox but the results were incredible. People from around the US came to him for healing. In 1892 the American School of Osteopathy was opened in Kirksville Missouri and several students graduated and practiced in their towns and cities.
